AL-GHAZZALI SYMPOSIUM: IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 900TH YEARS OF HIS DEATH
OCTOBER 7-9, 2011, ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Abu Hamid Muhammad Al-Ghazzali, born in 450/1058 in the city of Tus, was a versatile scholar, who had many and serious contributions to Islamic sciences. After serving as a scholar in various centers of learning Al-Ghazzali passed away in 505/1111 in the same city where he was born and left a massive scholarly heritage behind. Today his works still attract scholarly attention all over the world.
Al-Ghazzali is a unique intellectual in our history of Islamic sciences and thought for his work to establish the relationship between religious and philosophical thought and his criticism to both; for his leading role in getting Islamic theology and philosophy; for his contributions to the science of methodology of Islamic law and thus he founded a systematic structure for religious sciences; for his efforts to solve the problem of methodology by means of logic and the problem of ethics by means of Sufism; and for being a determining figure in popular religious understanding in Muslim society. Today Al-Ghazzali, because of his multi-dimensional personality and intellectual depth, has been the subject of academic studies both in the Muslim world and in the West.
Marmara University, Faculty of Theology is organizing an international symposium in order to commemorate Al-Ghazzali and his contributions to founding the systematic approach in Islamic sciences on the occasion the 900th anniversary of his death. Al-Ghazzali's biography; intellectual personality; evaluation of his time from scholarly, political, and cultural points; his contributions to Qur'anic exegesis, to the science of the traditions of the Prophet, Islamic law and jurisprudence, Sufism, philosophy, logic, and ethics; authenticity, contents, and genuineness of his works; traditional and modern criticism towards him; effects of his system and its reflection in modern day will be discussed in this symposium.
Those who would like to participate in the symposium are cordially invited to send the title and a 300-word abstract of their proposed papers to the secretariat of the symposium by October 15, 2010.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION TO THE SYMPOSIUM
1. Turkish, Arabic, and English are the languages of the symposium.
2. Prospective participants of the symposium also need to send their resumes along with the contact information in the registration form.
3. Papers should be original and should not have been presented at any previous conference.
4. Paper abstracts need to give the outlines of the subject and should not exceed 300 words.
5. Abstracts can be sent by using the registration form via e-mail, fax, or snail mail.
6. Presentation of the papers during the symposium will be limited by twenty minutes.
7. Papers should not exceed 8000 words.

SYMPOSIUM CALENDAR
Deadline for registration and submitting abstracts: October 15, 2010
Accepted papers will be announced by: December 15, 2010
Deadline for submitting the papers: May 15, 2011
Date of the symposium: October 7-9, 2011
